Hospitality and home cooking

A tree over 400 years old
After all the fine dining at different restaurants, today was our turn to witness and participate in real Japanese home cooking.

Reconstruction work at the temple

In addition to learning, trying things out and sharing food cultures we got to know the Jyosenji temple with its colorful history starting from the visit of the Emperor himself.

The makings of bento

Turns out the principles behind home cooking were much the same as with the finest restaurant foods we have been eating. Even the ingredients were very similar.
Cooling sushi rice the traditional way

A few colorful, beautiful and fresh ingredients were all that was needed for a pretty and convinient home made bento box. Just like in many other dishes that we've had so far.

Sushi roll

Our bento included special fresh and delicious baby bamboo from Nara that our hosts had generously gotten us the day before.

Along with learning how to make proper sushi rice we got to test our skills in making onigiri rice balls and putting together colorful sets of different dishes. With excellent teaching we got to learn and gain tools to take this sort of dining back home to Finland with us.

Simple but nutritious and colorful

Every dish tells a different story. Sometimes those stories come from the way the meal looks, when they're eaten or the way they are made. Sometimes those stories can also be derived from history. Sharing those stories unites the diners and brings a little extra meaning to the occasion.

Home made Oden

In many cultures preparing food and dining are social events. At the end of the day we got to enjoy some delicious home made Oden, a kind of a hot pot with many different ingredients. The pot was placed on the table in front of us, just like in preparing tempura or shabushabu. Seeing the food being prepared seems to be an important part of the process in the Japanese food culture.

Enjoying a plentiful meal

Thank you, once again, for all the hospitality we got to experience today. Today was a perfect ending to a perfect two weeks.

And so begins our last weekend in Osaka.
Well fed and happy
